Why don’t
you send out free books to instructors?
Professors
often ask why we don't follow what has become standard publishing
practice, sending out free books. The quick answer is that we don’t
publish books like other publishers do nor do we price them like
they do. We try to price our books reasonably and find that because
of that, very few students sell it back at the end of the semester.
The higher the price of the book, the more likely the student will
sell it back, creating a vicious cycle that causes prices to keep
rising so that publishers can recoup their investment. We know instructors
do care what prices the students are paying, and we will continue
to offer you an alternative.
Please
note, if you do adopt one of our books in your course, we will refund
your purchase price.
Are
there really any daughters?
Yes, there really are three daughters. You can read more
about the company history in the About Us section
of this website.
Is
Thomas Horton also an author?
Yes,
Tom Horton has seen both sides of the publisher-author relationship.
He is the author of the best selling Yogi:It Ain’t Over which
enjoyed several weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. It
was first published in 1989. We still have some copies from the
first printing; you can contact Tom Horton directly at hhorton11@aol.com
if you’d like to learn more.
How
can I become an author?
The
only way we can stay in business is by publishing new books. We're
eager to find authors who are willing to work with us to find ways
to
help students learn more effectively. We generally don't publish
basic
introductory textbooks (that field is pretty crowded already) and
usually look for a project that will innovate rather than imitate.
If
you have enough confidence in your book that you would be willing
to
partner with a tiny firm with no sales force rather than with a
cast of
thousands passing books around like they are gum drops, then please
send
us your ideas. We promise to respond within 48 hours. You can either
call us at 973-566-9998 or email directly
to:
karen_horton@hortondaughters.com
Please keep in mind that we publish
books for the college textbook market.
