Our series of teaching novels by Iris Weil Collett (aka D. Larry Crumbley) and co-authors has shown students that accounting can be fun! The books, The Ultimate Rip-Off, Accosting the Golden Spire, Burmese Caper, Trap Doors and Trojan Horses and Costly Reflections in a Midas Mirror are easy to use. Students read them and enjoy them. These supplements take up little or no class time. No need to change the main text, or lectures – these books fit in no matter how you teach the course. All you have to do is make this statement in class: “You will be tested on the novel.” (We’ll supply the test questions.)
The goal of these books is to spice up ho-hum subjects and make students see that the accounting profession is much better than the stereotype image they might have. According to the WALL STREET JOURNAL, Collett’s novels prove that the phrase “suspenseful accounting” is not necessarily an oxymoron.
In another review (WASHINGTON POST) Collett was referred to as “A cross between Mickey Spillane and Mr. Chips … Jump starting student interest in subjects not known for flair – from tax codes to accounting and auditing.”
Further praise indicates that Collett “Focuses on protagonists – like the forensic accountant – the investigator of ledgers – allowing the otherwise dry material to take on an aura of mystery. The dramatic intrigue, in turn, helps the student-reader retain the principles.“ (THE ADMINISTRATOR)
Shouldn’t your students be helped in their study of taxation, accounting, auditing or finance with the assignment of these entertaining and highly instructive teaching novels? We hope your answer is YES!
